College Friday Classes or No Class On Friday

Being a apart of an HBCU made me realize that some individuals are not on the same school schedule as Voorhees College. Voorhees College is on the class schedule where students have classes Monday through Thursday and not on Fridays. However, the new president is trying to change it the old and more normal schedule of Mondays through Friday.

Many students are aware of the change that is about to come but aren't trying to accept it. I, as a student, is not for the new change of days of classes. I feel that Fridays off has more effectiveness on students rather than having Friday classes.

For one, Fridays off allow students to intern at a business in your field. A Friday with no classes should consist of inspirational students trying to better their experience. He or she could travel longer distances to intern in a place where their major is really needed.

Another reason students shouldn't be allow to have classes on Fridays is because he or she can obtain a job. This job could be a way students gain more hours without the hassle of class, practice, or other extra-curriculum  school activities. The more a student works, the more a student can get an education.

So, next time one is thinking about a game when going to college, put these factors in your list. Sometimes Friday classes are good for you and some may not be. But, I feel that having Friday classes are not the a great option for VC to obtain.

7 Things An Incoming Freshmen Should Do At Any HBCU!

Coming to college, especially an HBCU, is the best experience ever. He or she who comes to college should be aware of the negative energy that can impact them. Also they should follow these tips to matriculate through their freshmen year.

First, don't pick up a bad habit. Bad habits are things that aren't good for you, such as smoking, drinking, cheating, being too sexually active, and not going to class.

Second, a incoming freshmen should avoid fights and drama. Fights and drama are actions that could lead to expulsion, probation, and possibly being arrested.


An incoming freshmen should be on time class and go to class every day. Missed days add up and sometimes, depending on the college, can effects your grade percentage.

Freshmen should also respect those around them including faculty, staff, administrations, and etc. These are individuals who could play a major role in your future.

Fifthly, freshmen should follow the rules giving  by school authority. Those who follow the rules will be looked at as leaders and also consider to hold important positions.

Incoming students should learn how to save money. College is very expensive and the more you save, the better off you will be in the long run. Start saving before entering college, it will help.

Lastly, stay focus freshmen. Come to college to get an education and don't waste your time. Remember the reason you came to college and continue to grow.

These are seven things a student should be aware when entering college. These are also tips for students who are already matriculating through college. Remember to follow these seven tips and before you know it, you'll be a graduating senior.

5 Tips For HBCU Homecoing

Homecoming is the time of year where the school celebrates and have fun. This is where the Greeks are lively, the teams are unstoppable, and the Queen and King reign in. However, there are a few tips for the homecoming season.

 

Tip 1: Don't use illegal substances or over-indulge on alcoholic beverages.

*Illegal substances are not allowed and shouldn't be use. Also alcohol should be drunk at the legal age and not abused.

 

Tip 2: Go to class

*Even though it is homecoming, one should still go to class and not miss due to hangover, peer pressure and other negative factors.

 

Tip 3: Participate in ALL homecoming events.

*The more events you participate in, the more memories a college student will have. Make the best of your homecoming, but be safe.

 

Tip 4: Stranger Danger

*Always be aware of strangers because anything can happen. Don't engage with strangers because you don't know them.

 

Tip 5: Travel in groups.

* When going out try traveling in groups. Go out with the same group and come back with the same group. Be accountable for one another.

 

These tips should be use at any HBCU during their homecoming week. Remember to be safe and don't drink and drive. Homecoming is the time to make your best memories and not your biggest regrets.

Lamar High School Football

Lamar High School located in Lamar, S.C is being talked about in such a positive way. Despite the high academics and outstanding marching silver powerhouse, the high recognition is coming from another high school source. The positivity is coming from the high schools football team.

 

The LHS football team, Silver Foxes, is undefeated in this school year, 2016-2017. The Silver Foxes has played eight consecutive Friday night games and hasn't let any of their fans down. Under the coaching of Fountain, the team has been a force to wreck with.

 

Lamar has won two of their region games and lead their region, A Region II, in overall wins. Next behind them is the Black Panthers of McBee, then Lions of Lewisville, then the Whirlwind of Timmonsville, and the Red Devils of Great Falls.

HBCU Homecoming Trends

There are many trends that comes with attending an HBCU. however, the most known trends are during homecoming. Homecoming is where students show their school pride and have fun.

Some known trends and traditions at an HBCU are bonfires, the homecoming game, Greek step shows, parties, and tailgating.

Bonfires is a well known event at an HCU during the fall because of the time of the year. When its cold outside bonfires are what keep the students and alumni warm.

The homecoming game is what makes or breaks the homecoming week. If the school wins the basketball or football game, the week of homecoming will be that much greater.

Greek step shows is the entertainment for the week. This is where the Greeks showcase their talents to win a monetary prize or to please the students and alumni.

The homecoming parties s where the students relax and have fun. Also a good tip is to travel in groups and never drink and drive.

The last trend that HBCUs are known for is tailgating. The day of the homecoming game alumni, Greeks, and students tend to tailgate and cook all types of southern food.

All of these trends should be seen at your HBCU homecoming and if not try to implement them and make your homecoming memorable.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast Cancer is a cancer that forms in the cells of the breast. This month of October is breast cancer awareness and I want to give some information on Breast Cancer.





Fact 1: Nearly 70% of all  Breast Cancers are found through self-exams.
Tip 1: Ladies examine yourself daily or weekly to ensure there are no signs of breast cancer.



Fact 2: Being a woman is the main risk for Breast Cancer, while men can also get diagnose with the disease too.
Tip 2: Men do not think women can only get Breast Cancer you all can too. Take the same necessary precautions as a women will do.





Fact 3: With early detection of Breast Cancer, there is 98% of a 5 year survival rate.
Tip 3: Get a check up regularly and be on top of your health. The more you know about your health, the longer you will live.

The Month of Septemeber!

September is Sickle Cell Awareness and many people are not aware of that. Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects nearly 100,000 people in the United States and this purpose of this month is to  show and highlight Sickle Cell Disease. This month also shines a light on the Sickle Cell Trait.

Many individuals, majority of African Americans, deals with the sickle cell disease. This is where red blood cells are formed into a crescent shape, like a sickle. The sickle-shaped red blood cells break apart easily, causing anemia and other infectious disease. Sickle red blood cells can only live up to 10-20 days instead of the normal 120 days. Sickle cell disease can cause blockage of blood flow and dehydration. Sickle is a underrated disease that many aren't aware of and should be looked into more deeply.

As a person with the sickle trait, I understand how sickle cell works. Sickle cell trait is estimated to affect more than 100 million people worldwide. Sickle cell takes over the body and controls the day to day functions of a human being. This disease or trait is not contagious, however it can be inherited. Based on the photo, one can see how one could be diagnose with the trait or with the full blown disease.

Sickle cell anemia has no widely available cure. Scientists are making progress in the development of new medications that will improve blood flow and help stop the sickling of cells. If you or anyone else is affected by this disease please spread the word and become aware of this major issue.

The Blessing of a HBCU

Most people think HBCU's are downfalls for African Americans or it doesn't prepare them for success however, that is the complete opposite. HBCU's allow students to understand the value of schooling, it brings the African-American community together, and it also give one an experience that is unforgettable.

Attending a History Black College and University has been nothing but a learning experience for me. My HBCU, Voorhees College, is giving me the feeling of togetherness, closeness, and is very family oriented. A HBCU brings these qualities because of its size and what the school instills in the individuals who put fourth effort to better themselves.

A HBCU brings plenty of challenges. I'm not saying other schools, such as PWI's, don't have challenges however, overcoming challenges at a HBCU is normal and prepares those students for the real world. A HBCU will bring nothing but greatness in the end and will ensure that you apply yourself and push yourself for what you want. The only thing that is given at a History Black College and
University is an opportunity and only the ones who try will succeed.

Domestic Violence

On Thursday August 26, 2016, Schrendria Robinson visited Voorheee College to speak on the topic of domestic violence. Domestic violence is a world-wide negative trend and is the intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assualt, and other abusive behaviors. Mrs.Robinson takes the crowd into an imagination of domestic violence that could possibly happen to their child or future child.

She encouraged students to speak up and imagined if you was in someone else shoes and also the perspective of the other gender. She ask the audience 3 major questions during this assembly. The 3 questions were "Why do people stay in domestic violence situations?", "Who do people do it?", and "Do you believe social media play a negative impact on domestic violence and what trends from social media is influencing domestic violence?" Many people answer honestly to those questions and was able to see how others feel about the situation.

School is finally approaching and my junior year at Voorhees College is about to start. I am excited, yet nervous. College has had it ups and downs, but I refuse to give up now. There has been many things I had to learn on my own with being a first generation college student. That's why today I have some tips for incoming college freshmen,returning students, and transfer students.

Tip 1: Apply early
* Apply early because this will leave one with plenty of time to make such an important decision. One can visit the colleges that he or she choose to see which is the better one for them.

Tip 2: Apply for financial aid early as well
* Apply for financial aid early because it sometimes takes a while to process. One will also need to make sure that every school he or she is trying to attend is on the financial aid. This will cause less back and fourth amongst the school and also may determine what school is best for the student.

Tip 3: Shop for your dorm room throughout the summer
*Waiting until last minute will sometimes make it hard for one to get what he or she actually wants. This will also save one money when he or she is about to go to school because the closer it gets the less he or she will have to buy. However, shop later for school supplies (paper,pencils,etc) because there will be a bigger sale on school supplies when school is about to start.

Tip 4: Pack smart
*Bring things that you will need when school starts. If one starts in the summer, he or she will need to bring summer items instead of their entire closet. When making trips home to visit family  and friends bring up things for the fall and take your summer clothes home. By the time you know it your wardrobe will have completely changed. Summer to fall just like that.

Tip 5: Settle in & Get comfortable
* Make your dorm feel like home. Decorate, accersorize, and make it your own. If you make yourself feel at home, the less home sick you will feel. Also try not to go home every weekend. The more you go home, the more you will miss it. Try limiting only going home on special occasions or only when you need to.

These are only a few tips I felt would be helpful to any college student. Hopefully these tips will help you because they have help me a lot.

Junior Year is Approaching

As I sit back and look at my sophomore year, all of the memorable moments come to mind.  From first starting in August to now ending in May, this year has been amazing. Time is winding down and my Junior year is approaching. However, before it is all over I would like to leave you with a poem that I feel will help you throughout the school year.

Learning Stage of Life

Start off with your best foot forward,
and never look back,
keep grinding  and stay on the move,
believe that someone has you back,
everyone is not against you,
however everyone is not your friend,

in order to achieve,
find someone who's loyal to end,
find someone that rides for you day and night,
even if its to a college party,
or helps you with a late test at night,
those are the people you need,
don't think about the people you want,
because at the end of the day,
you'll get what you want,
stay focus on your goal,
and try to do as told,
however we are all rebellious,
some more than the rest,
stay ahead and stay motivated,
be prepared and be calm,
because everything is going to fall in line,

after college is over,
there is no turning back,
no going back in time,
wishing you could change this and that,
just time to get ready,
because the past is not coming back,
so live life to the fullest now,
and do what you please,
have fun while you can,
because the college life is a breeze.

Alpha Kappa Mu Honors Society

Today at Voorhees College 16 bright scholars were inducted into Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society. 7 juniors and 9 seniors were inducted on this afternoon. Many of them with different majors, yet the same goal. Few family and friends came out to support their friends, love ones, and classmates.

The program acknowledged the individuals, juniors and seniors, who has put forth the effort to stand out among the rest of Voorhees College students. They have made many sacrifices to get to this point of success and sacrifices are necessary in order to achieve in college.

I advise everyone who are in college or plan to go, dedication and sacrifice is the key. Dedication is the drive you must have for your goal. Sacrifice the things that aren't necessary or will not prepare you for success. You cannot underestimate yourself. Give yourself no limit and reach beyond getting okay grades. Reach for the best and strive to be better then the rest. I leave you with this quote stated by Jesse Owen, "we all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort."

Voorhees College V.S Morris College

On March 22, 2016 Voorhees College Lady Tigers Softball Team travel to Morris College to play a double header softball game. The hour and a half drive was not wasted.

Both teams played an amazing game. I, pitcher for the Voorhees College Softball Team, felt that the game against Morris College was the best we ever played. We actually competed and Morris Lady Hornets Softball team gave us a run for our money.

Even though we played well, we lost 22-21 to Morris College in the first game. This upsetting lost gave us more drive to come back second game even stronger.

Second game we started off great and was leading three to zero. However, the next inning Morris College took over the second inning and scored 13 runs. We were next to bat after a long three up three down. We took advantage of the pitcher tiredness and got on bag plenty of times.

Before they earned three outs the score was 30 to 13. The Lady Tigers had made a comeback. Everyone was shock and we were even surprised, but it was a team effort for that successful win. I say all this to say even when one is down and out and feel like he or she can't conquer a desire goal, you will never know until you try. Put your best foot forward and strive to get the win. The win could be getting an A in a class or getting the dream job you wanted.

Katt Williams is Becoming Violence

Well known comedian, Katt Williams, got into a fist fight with a 17 year old on Wednesday March 23, 2016. Early Wednesday afternoon, video clips went viral of Katt Williams first sucker-punching a teenage boy, and then being taken to the ground by the young fella. However, this incident was just the tip of the iceberg. Less than two weeks ago, Williams, sucker-punched a man on stage at a Beanie Siegel concert in Philadelphia, inciting a brawl that left the comedian to another beat down. The only advice I have for Mr.Williams is to think before he acts. Others also need to do the same. One action can be the downfall for the rest of future. Katt Williams will no longer be looked at the same or respected by some of his peers because of his violent actions.

Remember someone is always watching or recording, therefore one need to be on top of his or her game. There is no time for mess ups or slip ups. Once something happen it can be erase.

Joining a Divine Nine

The Theta Epsilon Chapter of Voorhees College welcomed, on March 19, 2016, a junior and now we currently have eight Zeta's on the college campus. Intake of new members are always a joy and is a excited moment for everyone. Many come out to support such as family, friends, and classmates. Others come out to help make up their mind on joining a divine nine organization.

When deciding to join a divine nine organization one should think deeply on this decision. This is a decision that will be with you forever. There are three pointers one should take into consideration.

The first thing I recommend one to do is to decided with their heart and not worry about what others say. When making a decision like this one head should be clear, concise, and free of any influence. Never allow someone to have control over something you want to do.

The second thing I recommend one to do is to look into each organization. Look into the principles each organization stands for. Also see if their principles represent you. The last and final thing I recommend is to know the price and requirements of each sorority or fraternity. One is obligated to pay a certain amount to be apart of any Greek organization. There are also certain GPA requirements along with community service, recommendation letters, and background information.

One should listen to the advice listed above and think about it if your in college, or when you get to your desire college. Be confidence about the decision you make. However, I know the best decision I made was becoming a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.

Focus on Your Desire Future

In the future I plan to be a sports reporter/broadcaster, sports journalist, or news editor. I have notice that in college, one is taught how the fundamentals of your future occupation, however the best way to be taught is to get experience.

In order for anyone to reach their goal, he or she needs more experience in that field. Even if it's mass communication or biology, an individual still need internships and personal connections in that field. The connections start now, as a college student.

Any job one wants in the future should be earn with hard work and dedication. Realizing this has made me have a different drive. This has open my eyes to do something every weekend to get closer to your dream job.

I ask everyone to remember you can only be as great as you try to be. Don't take days off. Work on your craft every day and focus on the long term goal, which is your desired future. Nothing worth your future is given, it is earned.

For instance, the celebrities one see in the public eye today were not given their opportunity, they earned it. If one don’t believe this is true take Beyoncé and Taylor Swift as an example. Also look at Kobe Bryant and Candice Parker. These international known figures have reach their desired future through the hard work he or she has put in.

 

To Give a 2nd Chance or To Not Give A 2nd Chance

Second chances are opportunities that are given to someone by another individual after that person has done something bad to them. Usually it is hard to come by second chances, but it is really based off the situation.

For instance, I was hurt by this guy and I stopped all communication with him. He went to my friends and family trying to win me back, however I didn't feel he needed a second chance because I was nothing but nice to him.

After hearing my family and friends out I realized that maybe I was being too harsh about the situation. Therefore, I took him back with caution and was skeptical until he could prove that my decision to take him back was the best.

However, that didn't happen. He continued to mistreat me and was not loyal. Everything my family and friends said were wrong. He blinded them with his sweet ways. This doesn’t just happen to the best of us, this is a universal problem when it comes to second chances.

            Others also make the decision whether to give people a second chance, so you are not the only one. For example, Robin Thicke and Paula Patton. Robin Thicke poured his heart out to her and she didn’t take him back. Despite the songs, “Forever Love” and “Get Her Back”, he wrote to get her back, she refused to take him back.

But I say this to say, only give second chances to people you want to give second chances too. Never give a person the advantage of doing you wrong or mistreating you. A famous idiom states “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me,” therefore you can't blame no one else but yourself. Local Festivals

The first weekend in April is our local, Lamar S.C, festival. The name of this festival is the Egg Scramble.

During this weekend people from surrounding areas such as Darlington, Hartsville, Florence, Bishopville, and Sumter come to support and show love to the Lamar community.

There are rides for kids to enjoy. Thecircumstances of these rides are from little kids to teenagers and even tweens.

The Egg Scramble also offers different food booths for individuals to chow down on. Some booths serve funnel cakes and sweets while others sell Philly cheese steaks and loaded hot dogs. There are a variety of food and rides that anyone would enjoy.

The local high school band, my alumni school and band, performs during the annual parade and sometimes other bands perform as well. The parade also consists of creative cars owned by locals and sometimes different cartoon characters for the kids to watch.

This event usually starts Thursday night and end Saturday night. This is weekend where the community comes together and celebrates us being a town and being there for one another.

I recommend everyone to have a festival or event in their home town. It doesn't matter how small or how big it is, the goal is to give back to the community and show others how your town is better than theirs. Just remember different events in your town are the reason people stay and increase and population or leave without looking back.

Mitchell named Voorhees College Softball Coach

          Voorhees College, located in Denmark, S.C, has received a new softball coach. However, he is not a new face to the college community; he is just new to the sport.

            The new Lady Tigers Softball coach is Derrick Mitchell. Mitchell has been coaching basketball ever since I arrived on campus, fall 2014. He has taken the role of softball coach in order to keep us, the ladies, active and make a difference to our season record.

            Mitchell has been goo so far with managing and coaches us as a team. He motivates us to have a winning season and he understands how softball is different from basketball.

            Mitchell has played basketball his entire life; it has become second nature to him. However, softball isn’t. While we are learning new techniques, Coach Mitchell is learning new coach styles and the major keys to softball.

            Even though he has little experience with softball, he is striving to have a winning season, like the 15-5 Tigers basketball team. Derrick Mitchell is a great coach for this position and I know he will make a difference to our season and total wins.

Go Big for Valentine’s Day or Keep It Simple

Valentine’s Day is a day people celebrate their special someone and love ones. They are taken out, surprised with gifts, or ask the big question “Will you marry me?”

Well for me, Valentine’s Day didn’t go that way.

Four days before Valentine I met my guy friend, Chris. We began conversing amongst one another and getting to know one another. Therefore, getting a gift or going out was not on my mind or “to do” list. However, we did do something small.

We went out with my friends to Wal-Mart and Zaxyb’s. Nothing major just something slight. When my friends and I went to Wal-Mart Chris stopped at the arcade grab it machine. Inside were teddy bears and other stuff animals.

 He pulled out a dollar and put it in the machine. He slowly proceeds to pick up the object and move it towards the drop bin. Before I knew it Chris won me a bright pink stuff fish.

My Valentine was complete. After that one grab I felt like I have found my valentine.

Voorhees College also celebrated Valentines Day. Cafe surprised the students with Valentine cookies and cupcakes. Also, the men of Alpha Phi Alpha sold Valentine Day baskets in advance to give out on the 14th. Therefore, I was not the only one who had a great Valentine Day, many of Voorhees students were show how much they were appreciated. 

I never really celebrated Valentine’s Day until that day. I never really had a Valentine, but yesterday was the best. However, I say all this to say.

Remember the small things mean the most. It’s not about the expensive gifts, unexpected surprises; it is about the thought that counts. Being in college and having a valentine or not having one is difficult, especially seeing others with one. Black History Month is Trending in 2016

Black History Month is a month where blacks are recognized for their contributions to the world and ability to make a difference for African-American lives. Black History Month is celebrated during the month of February.

This Black History Month has been the talk of the 2016 year. The diversity issue within the Oscars and minorities not being nominated for awards has made this year’s Black History Month to be the first highlight of 2016.

            Many people have stated that Black History Month needs to be forgotten and not celebrated because Caucasians and other races don’t have a month for themselves. However, I feel as though it shouldn’t be forgotten. Black History Month should not be forgotten because it teaches African-Americans about their history.

Schools are now starting to limit the teaching of black history and its stopping the expansion of knowledge of the struggle African-Americans have faced. Allowing it to be taught in school and continuing the celebration is the only way people will continue to learn about African-American history.

            Black History Month has grown from a week into a month. Before Black History Month there was Negro History week. Negro History week was established in 1926 and was celebrated the second week of February. It was set for that week because it coincided with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln, (February 12, 1809), and Frederick Douglass  (February 1818.)

            People should really respect Black History Month and recognize how important it is. Despite the views people have black history has a major role in our history. Without black history, there is no history.

The Relationship before the Relationship

First off let’s understand what exactly a situationship is. A situationship is sort of like a relationship without the title, but that is where most of the confusion begins.

For a comparison, one would picture the rapper Lil Durk and the hip-hop artist Dej Loaf. I have some advice when it comes to situationships. 

When it comes to a situationship one should be able to converse and ask the major question that will determine everything, “What are we?” Some individuals believe questioning is being aggravating; however it is being clear about what you want. I also advise one to not get their feelings involved too deeply.

Understand that things between you and them are not official until one is able to have that conversation and decide what is best for them. These two suggestions should help anyone who feels as if they are in a situationship and should allow themselves to never get in one.
