Rivalry: VC V.S MOCO

When attending a college or university or any school to be exact, there is always a rivalry school. There is always a school that is in competition with school you attended or are attending. This school will try to beat them in sports, school pride, and sometimes academically. The rivalry to the college I attend, Voorhees College is Morris College.

Voorhees College, VC,  is located in Denmark, S.C and Morris College, MOCO,  is located in Sumter, S.C. These schools are not near by, however the distance between them is about an hour and thirty minutes. When any games are played at each school, the administration tends to provided transportation to the games because this is where it's time to have school pride and time for the teams to show up and show out.

Since a freshmen here at Voorhees College, the games between Morris were always intense. They seem to bring everyone out to enjoy the show as well as encourage students to cheer for their home team.

Rivalries tend to make the school hype. Rivalry games or events will always be something a student remembers because it will always leave an ever lasting expression, good or bad.


For instance, I can still remember the time we, Voorhees College Softball Team, travel to Morris for a game. The fans were ruthless. They taunted, picked, and annoyed us the entire game. However, it raised our  intensity and drive, which led us  to come out with a win in the end. No feelings were truly hurt because at the end of the game everyone shook hands and went about their day. No grudges, no love lost, just experiences and friends gained.

You can see rivalries aren't necessarily done to be spiteful or  to dislike the other team. Rivalries are to make your experience in school more memorable. It is also used as motivation for the players and inspiration for others to get involved. This rivalry between Morris College and the home team Voorhees College will probably never die, but if it does a new school will not be ready for our Tiger Pride.

College Friday Classes or No Class On Friday

Being a apart of an HBCU made me realize that some individuals are not on the same school schedule as Voorhees College. Voorhees College is on the class schedule where students have classes Monday through Thursday and not on Fridays. However, the new president is trying to change it the old and more normal schedule of Mondays through Friday.

Many students are aware of the change that is about to come but aren't trying to accept it. I, as a student, is not for the new change of days of classes. I feel that Fridays off has more effectiveness on students rather than having Friday classes.

For one, Fridays off allow students to intern at a business in your field. A Friday with no classes should consist of inspirational students trying to better their experience. He or she could travel longer distances to intern in a place where their major is really needed.

Another reason students shouldn't be allow to have classes on Fridays is because he or she can obtain a job. This job could be a way students gain more hours without the hassle of class, practice, or other extra-curriculum  school activities. The more a student works, the more a student can get an education.

So, next time one is thinking about a game when going to college, put these factors in your list. Sometimes Friday classes are good for you and some may not be. But, I feel that having Friday classes are not the a great option for VC to obtain.

7 Things An Incoming Freshmen Should Do At Any HBCU!

Coming to college, especially an HBCU, is the best experience ever. He or she who comes to college should be aware of the negative energy that can impact them. Also they should follow these tips to matriculate through their freshmen year.

First, don't pick up a bad habit. Bad habits are things that aren't good for you, such as smoking, drinking, cheating, being too sexually active, and not going to class.

Second, a incoming freshmen should avoid fights and drama. Fights and drama are actions that could lead to expulsion, probation, and possibly being arrested.


An incoming freshmen should be on time class and go to class every day. Missed days add up and sometimes, depending on the college, can effects your grade percentage.

Freshmen should also respect those around them including faculty, staff, administrations, and etc. These are individuals who could play a major role in your future.

Fifthly, freshmen should follow the rules giving  by school authority. Those who follow the rules will be looked at as leaders and also consider to hold important positions.

Incoming students should learn how to save money. College is very expensive and the more you save, the better off you will be in the long run. Start saving before entering college, it will help.

Lastly, stay focus freshmen. Come to college to get an education and don't waste your time. Remember the reason you came to college and continue to grow.

These are seven things a student should be aware when entering college. These are also tips for students who are already matriculating through college. Remember to follow these seven tips and before you know it, you'll be a graduating senior.

5 Tips For HBCU Homecoing

Homecoming is the time of year where the school celebrates and have fun. This is where the Greeks are lively, the teams are unstoppable, and the Queen and King reign in. However, there are a few tips for the homecoming season.

 

Tip 1: Don't use illegal substances or over-indulge on alcoholic beverages.

*Illegal substances are not allowed and shouldn't be use. Also alcohol should be drunk at the legal age and not abused.

 

Tip 2: Go to class

*Even though it is homecoming, one should still go to class and not miss due to hangover, peer pressure and other negative factors.

 

Tip 3: Participate in ALL homecoming events.

*The more events you participate in, the more memories a college student will have. Make the best of your homecoming, but be safe.

 

Tip 4: Stranger Danger

*Always be aware of strangers because anything can happen. Don't engage with strangers because you don't know them.

 

Tip 5: Travel in groups.

* When going out try traveling in groups. Go out with the same group and come back with the same group. Be accountable for one another.

 

These tips should be use at any HBCU during their homecoming week. Remember to be safe and don't drink and drive. Homecoming is the time to make your best memories and not your biggest regrets.

HBCU Homecoming Trends

There are many trends that comes with attending an HBCU. however, the most known trends are during homecoming. Homecoming is where students show their school pride and have fun.

Some known trends and traditions at an HBCU are bonfires, the homecoming game, Greek step shows, parties, and tailgating.

Bonfires is a well known event at an HCU during the fall because of the time of the year. When its cold outside bonfires are what keep the students and alumni warm.

The homecoming game is what makes or breaks the homecoming week. If the school wins the basketball or football game, the week of homecoming will be that much greater.

Greek step shows is the entertainment for the week. This is where the Greeks showcase their talents to win a monetary prize or to please the students and alumni.

The homecoming parties s where the students relax and have fun. Also a good tip is to travel in groups and never drink and drive.

The last trend that HBCUs are known for is tailgating. The day of the homecoming game alumni, Greeks, and students tend to tailgate and cook all types of southern food.

All of these trends should be seen at your HBCU homecoming and if not try to implement them and make your homecoming memorable.
